Interview with Lukas Berger

This interview was conducted on a Monday morning in December while Lukas and Susan lie in bed watching the birds on the telephone pole out the window. Lukas could not resist climbing on Susan throughout the interview.

Susan: Are you sleepy?
Lukas: Yeah. Go to sleep. Then wake up.
Susan: Do you have dreams when you sleep?
(silence)
Susan: Dreams happen when you sleep. Dreams are when you tell yourself stories in your sleep. Sometimes you remember them and sometimes you forget.
What do you dream about when you sleep?
(pause)
Lukas: Apples.
Susan: Really? You dream of apples?
Lukas: And cherries.
Susan: Cherries?
Lukas: Aaaaaand presents.
Susan: (laughing) you dream of presents?
Lukas: Yeah. (with a big smile) And beds.
Susan: You have good dreams Lukas.
Lukas: Aaaaaand, I dream of colors.
Susan: You have a lot of dreams don’t you?
Lukas: Yeah. (giggles and climbs over Susan. Falls on his head on the bed laughing.)

This window into Lukas’ world amazes me. He has already begun to tell stories. It is through his stories that I remember how to play and to invent. I am thrilled to be taken into his world of unpretentious associations. He is teaching me exactly what I teach to adults and teenagers in my acting classes. Why do we stop inventing? Why must we edit ourselves? I have always thought of myself as a creative person but I am amazed already at what he thinks of and how certain he is in his imaginative world. He is a true artist. We are all born artists aren't we?
