The proposal
Today a man proposed to me. He was only three years old and we were already related but it was probably one of the most touching proposals ever. We were riding in the car and the song Fields of Gold came on the radio. I turned it up and said to Lukas "I love this song. I sang this song to papa." "When?" He asked. "I sang it to him when we got married." "What's married?" Inquired the curious creature in the car seat. "Married is when two people choose to be friends and partners for their whole lives until they die. They have a big party with all their friends and promise to stay together." Lukas pondered this for some time and then he said " Mama, I want to choose you to be my friend until I die. We can be married." I wasn't sure how to respond. I wanted to cry. "That is really special that you want that sweetie. Thank you. I want to be your friend until we die too." Then there was another long silence in the car which was broken by "Mama, whats die?" Hmmm, how to approach this one. "Well Lukas, you know how the wolf in the movie eats the bunny. When the bunny is eaten he has died. His body doesn't work anymore and so he dies." Maybe that is too violent of an example. "Or when Great Oma became so old that her body didn't work anymore and she had to leave it, she died." I decided to bait him with one more metaphysical conversation. "Some people think that when the body dies the spirit in the body that makes the person special and who they are is still alive but we can't see it." He doesn't bite. I guess the concept of both marriage and death are enough to absorb on one 10 minute car ride.
